What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a ‘developmental disorder’ because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.”

Autism now affects 1 in 59 children (Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 2018) – a 15% increase over 2012.

Signs of ASD

As a parent or caregiver, one of the most important things you can do is be aware of the signs of autism. The following signs and symptoms may indicate your child is at risk for developing an autism spectrum disorder.

Communication:

  • By 6 mos. there are no social smiles directed towards others
  • By 9 mos. there are no vocal sounds or shared smiles
  • By 12 mos. there is no babbling, response to name or use of gestures to communicate
  • By 16 mos. there are no words

Social Interaction:

  • Lack of ability to develop peer relationships
  • Lack of appropriateness in verbal and non-verbal behavior
  • Doesn’t share interests or achievements with others

Behavior Patterns:

  • Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior
  • Peculiar attachment to inanimate objects
  • Difficulty in motor control

If you observe any of the above in your child, it is important that you bring this information to your child’s pediatrician as they can provide recommendations for an evaluation.
